Mordheim 2019 – Nicolas Grillet

Nicolas is the master of the gritty and textured, his work is always dark, foreboding and unique. His blog is one of my favourites and worth checking out for great 40k, AoS and art work. Enjoy this visual feast!

Oh Dear Father, Forgive me for I have sinned. I kept my doubts for me, when I knew I had to confess to the Mother Alke. I fear that it’s too late now, and that the doubts will spread, that madness will reach us all, and that the hope that faith bought us will turn to cinder. It all started during the Night of the Remembering. Twenty years passed since your judgment cleansed the city. During this time, we made sure that Your Will was made real, and we kept spreading the Holy Fire to the unfaithful and the corrupted. Each year at the same date, Mother Elfriede gathered the sisters in the nave of the great cathedral, at the bosom of the Rock, and we prayed for another sign from You. But this year, we had an answer. Oh dear Father tell me that the answer came from you. Is this Silent Knight a warrior you sent to guide us? Why sending her to us, but not allowing her to speak to us? Why did she choose Mother Ilse? We know that the Knight spoke to her before she commit suicide. What truth was so terrible that she had to renounce her oath to You? She stayed confined in her room for two weeks with this Knight. When we heard the cries, it was too late. We found Mother in her chamber Ilse her wrist cut, crying in despair that she wanted to die, shouting the most heretical words to You, who would not let her go. Such sins could not be forgiven, and in the morning, at the top of the cliff overlooking the ashes of Mordheim, the Silent Knight standing calm next to the Sister Rosamund, the executioner, we gave her body to the Flames, hoping that her soul would be purified. She burnt for seven days, screaming, crying, desecrating, but never dying. And for seven days, the Silent Knight stood still at her side. She is still burning now, and the Knight is still at her sides. But she is serene. Such signs could not be ignored, and even if most of the sisters think that her simple existence is sacrilegious, some of us followed her and the Silent Knight when the pyre collapsed and they went down into the City. We follow her now, as she sets the ruins on fire again. We think she is looking for something, or someone. But I fear that the signs we are following are not yours, Dear Father. I fear that you are not listening. And I wonder, who is answering my prayers?

  1. Sweet Sigmar, these are incredible Nicolas! Models and terrain. Some of the most evocative work I have seen for a long time. Wonderful use of base models…They fit right in the dystopian ruins of Mordheim. Hats off to your sir!
